Museum Collections
How do we acquire things?
The Museum Collections Program collects objects through donation and purchase on behalf of the Government of the Northwest Territories. We are also an official archaeological repository for the NWT and Nunavut, which means that objects collected by archaeologists must come back to us for safekeeping after they are studied.
What do we have?
We collect historical and cultural objects, works of art, and science specimens that represent the people and regions of the Northwest Territories. We presently care for, and document, about 218,000 objects and specimens from the NWT and Nunavut.

How do we acquire records?
The NWT Archives collects records by donation, and through transfers from the Government of the Northwest Territories. The NWT Archives’ mission is to identify, acquire, preserve and make accessible unpublished records which document the history of the NWT.
What do we have?
Our holdings include: government records, diaries, letters, maps, photographs, audio tapes, and film. We have kilometers of text, hundreds of thousands of photographs, and thousands of hours of audio, video and film. We have nearly 50,000 photographs digitized and available to view online.
