Indian Man With Stretched Pelt, 1971
Oil on Masonite, 32” x 24”
Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre

The painting depicts Joseph Codzi of Colville Lake, now deceased. The Codzi family were the only people residing at Colville Lake when Bern Will Brown founded Our Lady of Snow Mission there in 1962.

The impressionistic softness and warm colours of the tundra in the background adds contrast to the heightened realism of Joseph Codzi’s weather beaten face and hand.
