Ralph Kimiksana shaping clay to make a lamp, or qullivialuvik, 1995. (PWNHC/Elisa Hart) |
Working with clay In 1995, Inuvialuit Elder Ralph Kimiksana showed how people fashioned lamps from clay (qiku) when he was a child.
People used to make oil lamps[from] clay. They made it just like rock.
They mixed it with sand and water, lots of water, and mix it and keep
checking it
When it's all the same, then you mix the bark in and
then you mix it till the whole thing gets black. Then you put some oil
in it and mix it again. |
