Question 1: How did the pipeline companies get along with the Dene?

Answer 1: I think the companies needed to show that they were willing to work with people from the communities because they wanted to build the pipeline and they needed support. One of the companies, Foothills, was going to build pipelines right into each community so the communities could get gas from the pipeline and heat their homes with it. The other company wanted to build a pipeline that went down to southern Canada so the gas would flow right through.

So the two companies had somewhat different attitudes. I think they were pressured into working with people and listening to people. They probably weren't going to do that without the insistence of Judge Berger having the community meeting.
