Question 4: Why did people not like the idea of the pipeline?

Answer 4: In 1975, moreso than today, people lived by hunting and trapping. They didn't have jobs in the communities or in mining companies like you see today. So it was really important that the land and the resources from the land remained strong and were well protected.
There was a comment from an elder in Willow Lake, a man named Fred Willow. And he said: 'The land is like our mother and father.' That really is the way people talked about the land, it was really personal. It was very much a part of who they were. They didn't want to have the land hurt or destroyed by industrial development.
