Answer 5: The Inquiry itself, I think was a spectacularly good event for all the people in the north. You know what was interesting about the Berger Inquiry report? Most government reports never get read by anybody except for senior government officials who have to read them. The report that Berger put out was a best seller. It sold out right across Canada right away and that's never happened with a government report before.

That was how important the Inquiry was for Canada, not just for the Dene, but right across the country it was really an important event.

And it changed the way we think about listening to people. Before Berger did his Inquiry, there wasn't a practice of government coming in and listening to people that we see even today. We have different boards that come. Something is going to happen in the community, government has to come in and ask people what they feel about it. And that's the law today. And that started really clearly as a result of the Berger Inquiry.
