us well as it gave us a better chance to locate dogs, without which we couldn't move.

Hornby made a scouting trip with an Indian for guide and located a stream rightly called “Stinking” Creek which showed many tracks of Fur bearers. It was Sulphur which made the creek so odiferous (& our tea was sometimes tastiforous too) but that didn't seem to bother the Fur, so being lucky enough shortly afterwards to procure three dogs, we bought a sleigh, dog harness, traps & a few other necessities & set off to try our luck.

Hornby knew quite a lot about trapping, but even though I hated the very thought of it, I had to learn, and – as he said – practical experience was the best teacher.
