Besides wet clothes, we often got wet feet. We were both wearing moccasins – Indian shoes made from Buckskin and they were like a sponge in water. Leather boots were out of the question as ones feet would have frozen in no time at all in them. But there was often overflowed water under the snow, and one could not see it. Wet feet – even in moccasins meant a chance of freezing.
At one point the ice was very bad owing to the river being shallow and very swift. It was touch and go whether it would carry us or break away. I was running ahead of the dogs – Hornby behind, driving them and when I came to this part, I travelled as fast as I could with a gliding motion instead of taking real steps, and got over alright. Hornby lay full length on the sleigh,
