There were only 6 White people, the Hudson's Bay Trader (his wife was a half-breed) the Northern Company's Trader and his wife – two French Priests and myself.

The Fur Trade is a queer business and at times feeling runs high, as may be imagined when I say that I had three real fights with the Hudson's Bay Trader, that winter, and, still, was good friends with him when I left. In fact, on one occasion, I fought him before breakfast
