A Northern Experience: The Journals of Norman Robinson

we in our small, but powerful, Gas boat, followed a short cut known as the Sawmill Schny, which cut off about 40 miles.

The Slave was a wide River, but this Schny was very narrow and as we raced down it, our wake curled up onto the shore. Coming round a bend we met two Indians in a small canoe. There was no time to stop or even slow down and when we had passed – they were left, still sitting in their Canoe, but high and dry, on shore.

After leaving the Schny, the first 4 miles on the Lake were difficult to navigate owing to the shallowness of the water, but we got across successfully and ran into Fort Resolution, 150 miles from Smith.
