point. It was still 1000 miles to their destination. Harry stayed – his partner went on. Harry took a wife – an Indian – black as the ace of spades or, as he used to say himself – black as the Earl of Hell's riding boot. She could speak no English & he could speak no Slavi – her language. Harry liked Bear skin caps, and as that skin was “bad medicine” for her – any time he brought one home – she threw the cap out (with Harry still in it). Their fights were soon over & reconciliation was sure to follow. But peace never lasted too long. Seventy five miles to Hay River – past Dead man's Island and along a rocky & treacherous shore. Hay River Post lay just far enough up the Hay River, to possess one of the finest harbours in the North.
There were only two Trading Posts, a mounted Police Barracks & an Anglican Mission, which housed a large number of Indian and Esquimaux children. On special occasions the little church was very prettily decorated by the children, who were the most artistic kiddies I have ever seen.
