After passing the chute in the picture, a cross wave suddenly stood our scow on its side. Two oars and the steering sweep went overboard, but we were able to retrieve the sweep and our oar, as we needed them.

Steering into a providential eddy, we had only just tied up and got ashore when the scow sank. The second scow came through alright, profiting by our misadventure.

Camping for the night was necessary in order to patch holes in our scow and caulk up some places where boards had sprung.
