submerged rock, we had to stand on the rock, get our backs under the scow to lift her and yet make a wild grab when she slid off.

So it went till we came to the Mountain Rapid, half way down, and had to make a portage. The portage was only about 500 yards in length, but very steep on both sides. A team of horses had been ordered to await us with all necessary blocks and tackle. It was a case of pulling these huge scows clean over this small hill, no small job.
