wait to see the launching as I had to make a short trip, as far as Fort Resolution and back, on a gas boat named the Lady Mackworth.

The Hudsons Bay Company had signed me on as purser on their big steamer “The McKenzie River,” for the summer and I was just filling in my time until she was ready. The Lady Mackworth, named after Lord Rhonda's daughter, was very fast, being powered with two 75 horse power engines.

The trip to Resolution did not take long and on my return I found that supplies were beginning to arrive at Fort Smith, for loading on the McKenzie River, so I had to start checking.

My duties included looking after all freight and passengers – making out way bills – checking passengers tickets and allotting Cabins. The Commisariat Department also, was in my charge
