she saw was Fort McPherson, situated 60 miles ups the Peel river – a tributary of the McKenzie – entering it at the head of the Delta.

The Delta covered an extent of 100 miles and was made up of numerous small channels, but later it was found out to be navigable, and boats ran through to Aklavik – on the Arctic Sea. The trip downstream was made fairly quickly, but the return trip – against the current, was slow.

This boat was capable of carrying about 120 tons of freight and usually hauled or pushed, scows loaded with as much as 60 tons each. In this way, she was able, on the one trip, to feed the Fur Trading Posts along her route. A second trip was impossible owing to the short season.
