Owing to the depth of snow-one couldn’t go a step without snow shoes. On the trail they were generally 2 feet 6 inches long and called trail shoes, but when hunting over loose snow-they were-should be anyway—the height of the man who was wearing them.

Now and then, passing Indians would visit us, camping in the bush near our shack. Funnily enough, they were always out of something or other and we had to remedy the shortage. Natives are the same all over the world.
