the small Barren Land Caribou, similar in appearance and habits to Reindeer roamed in their thousands, leaving their young on the Arctic Coast in May—travelling approximately one thousand miles South—then back again—each year—closing in to a solid phalanx at the crossings of lakes—opening out again to feed. Surely a traveller would be assured of plenty of fresh meat.

Possibly, in Hornby’s case, the direction of the annual migration was changed. In any case, it seems a likely conclusion, as the caribou were not found at the expected places, with the result that three brave men gave up their lives under the most terrible conditions.
