Kitigaaryuk Today

Many of the survivors of the epidemics moved from Kitigaaryuk to Tuktoyaktuk in the 1930s. Today, Tuktoyaktuk is a thriving community and Kitigaaryuk is used only seasonally by hunters.

The importance of Kitigaaryuk in Inuvialuit and Canadian history was recognized in 1978 when the Government of Canada declared it and the surrounding area a National Historic Site. The Inuvialuit Social Development Program has interviewed elders to learn more about their life at Kitigaaryuk, and the traditional knowledge that was passed down though their elders.
