Archaeology at Kuukpak

Kuukpakmiut suffered severely from foreign diseases that accompanied the arrival of Europeans in the late 1800s. Like many Inuvialuit villages, Kuukpak was largely abandoned and now exists only in memory and as an archaeological site.

In many areas, the banks of the Mackenzie River are washing away. The remains of Kuukpak and other important Inuvialuit archaeological sites are being lost as this erosion progresses.
