Then Arctic Red River, 200 miles from the Arctic Sea, and there, even at that distance, the River is tidal. Our stop at Arctic Red River – home of the Loucheaux Indians – was very short, barely time enough to unload the freight for that Post and then on to Fort McPherson – 60 miles up the Peel River – which entered the McKenzie 50 miles below Arctic Red. This post was the end of our run and 1300 miles from Fort Smith. We were really glad when the return journey started. It had been a hard run.
