He then came back to me for advice.

I told him to visit the man in question, who was a half breed – & threaten to shoot him. He took his rifle but luckily did not load it, and in the conversation that ensued – he got so angry that he cracked the breed across his head with the rifle.

It was more than I intended, but worked wonders. Peace reigned supreme for the rest of the Winter.

My house and store were close together, a comfortable arrangement in a place where the temperature goes down to 75º below zero. The house, built of logs, had two rooms, but the store was just one big room, with an upstairs for extra storage space.
