in fact the sun simply touched the horizon and rose again immediately. But in winter, we had 6 weeks to 2 months of endless darkness. It never got light at all, and the result was that one had no conception of time – trading was done day or night, and Indians arrived at all hours, with their loads of Fur. Meals were eaten when one was hungry & one slept when one was sleepy. It was a curious period, & very hard on the nerves.
