Steering a river steamer was always done by Natives who had many landing arks to go by, but who could also “read” the water, that is, pick the proper channel by watching the boils and eddies.

Our pilots were Dave McPherson (in centre of picture) a full blooded Slavi Indian – and Jimmy Sibbestson – a half Exquimaux.

Dave McPherson's features showed a decidedly Asiatic trend.

These pilots had no duties except those connected with steering and looking after steering gear. As the short season demanded travel day & night
