Meanwhile the shack was finished-just room for two bunks (built with small poles) and a tiny stove-a table but no chairs (as there wasn’t room). “Chinked” between the legs with sticks to fill the gaps and “plastered” with mud, it made a snug harbour for us even at 30 and 40 below zero.

Fur was plentiful on the Buffalo River-according to “sign” and we tried our hand at getting a beaver as we needed meat. We were successful as the picture shows, and the meat was excellent although very fat and rich.

It was now time to go back to Smith for our Winter’s supply, but alas I got influenza. I could only manage a 20 lb pack as we intended to
