The Needles

Sewing needles were made from strong and flexible bird leg bones, such as goose. The first step in needle making was to groove a leg bone deeply with a stone tool called a burin. A narrow piece of bone was snapped off along this groove, and then shaped with an abrading stone. Unfinished needles were found in a variety of sizes and stages of manufacture.
