Whaling at Kitigaaryuk

In Nuligak's time, as many as 1000 people gathered at Kitigaaryuk each summer to hunt beluga whales. Traditionally, Inuvialuit used small skin kayaks (qayaqs) to hunt beluga whales in the shallow waters near shore.

In the early 1900s, Inuvialuit began using whaleboats and schooners to hunt belugas . This allowed them to venture out into deeper waters.
