with our kind host Simon Fraser, but we had to move on.
It was only 100 miles to our next stop – Fort Fitzgerald, but unfortunately we took a wrong trail when following a “Cut off” and travelled half a day in the wrong direction. I had a bad attack of ‘Flu' and, under ordinary circumstances, could have ridden at times, on top of the load. But on this occasion, the ice was very rough and our dogs had enough to do in pulling the sleigh.
Fort Fitzgerald is named after Inspector Fitzgerald of the North West Mounted Police, who, with his whole party, were frozen to death whilst attempting the 500 mile winter patrol from Fort McPherson to Dawson.
