A few of the hardier vegetables can be grown further North, but Fort Good Hope is the most Northerly point where potatoes can be successfully grown. The river bank at Fort Good Hope is about 200 feet high and a flight of steps runs from top to bottom to make it easier for the Indians when carrying freight.

Half way between Fort Good Hope and the next Post – Arctic Red River – lies Chicago, but in this case – instead of an huge city, there is one shack only – an outpost of the Hudsons Bay Company.
