When Kuukpangmiut first lived at Kuukpak they built their dwellings
along a stretch of shore next to some low-lying islands that were
intersected by shallow channels. Hunters in kayaks probably
chased beluga whales into these channels, and speared them in the
shallow waters.
Over the centuries, silt carried down the Mackenzie River filled
in the channels, joining the islands together and to the shore. Buried
in the ground here, along the ancient shoreline, are the remains
of the oldest dwellings at Kuukpak, built about 500 years ago. |
